Historical Association Quality Mark

Quality Mark for HistoryThe Historical Association Quality Mark is an award that recognises the excellence of history provision in a school. The Quality Mark provides a framework for success in which to develop outstanding provision. There is a quality assured framework for a school working to achieve the Quality mark to follow, with a clear assessment procedure delivered by independent Historical Association appointed assessors.

Our assessor found that, "The History provision at Barrow Hedges Primary School is strong, vibrant, and dynamic. The supportive senior leadership team enables the subject leader to conduct active research to continually develop the subject both within the school, and beyond."

Early Years Quality Mark

Quality MarkThis national accreditation is awarded to early years providers which meet the Quality Mark Standard.  Each Quality Mark award will last for three years, after which a renewal assessment is required. At Barrow Hedges we have been successful in attaining this award for the last five years.

The Quality Mark for Early Years promotes and supports the development of young children in their communication, language and early mathematical skills. This is achieved through providing investigative learning opportunities suitable for the stage of development each child has reached, with support from skilled practitioners. Such a positive start in their early years gives every child the ‘bedrock’ of a good education and sets them up with the skills they need for their future school and adult lives.

To achieve a Quality Mark a provider must undergo an assessment, carried out by an external accredited assessor, against the 10 ‘Elements’ of the Quality Mark for the Early Years framework. These include reviewing young children’s learning needs and planning their next steps, providing safe, stimulating resources and equipment – both indoors and outdoors - and having skilled early years practitioners. Positive partnerships with families and effective monitoring and evaluation are also required - particularly to achieve renewal when continuing development must be demonstrated.

Healthy Schools

Healthy SchoolsHealthy Schools is a national initiative that aims to support the health and wellbeing of children. In 2013, a London-specific initiative was funded by the Mayor of London to help schools to refresh, revive and re-establish healthy environments.

In 2021, we received the Healthy Schools Gold Award for our work on Mental Health and Wellbeing. This is done both on a class level as well as through our ELSA team, nurture groups & behaviour mentoring. We have continued to develop our provision and practice to ensure our children are as best supported as possible.
